Infrared photoelectric switches are categorized into reflective and through-beam types. Reflective photoelectric switches detect the presence of an object by sensing the infrared light reflected back from it.

If an object is present, the switch receives the infrared light and its contacts activate; otherwise, the contacts reset. It features three connection wires: positive terminal, negative terminal, and OUT (output signal). When approaching the stop block, the output level is low; otherwise, it remains high.

Note that the detection distance should not be too close to the switch, as this prevents activation. Through-beam photoelectric switches consist of separate transmitter and receiver units.

When unobstructed, the receiver detects infrared light emitted by the transmitter, causing its contacts to activate. When an object blocks the beam, the receiver fails to detect infrared light, and its contacts reset. The output state of through-beam photoelectric switches is typically NPN output. The operating state of the output transistor can be categorized as either ON when light is detected or ON when light is blocked.
